Hi Tricia. My original post appeared on Curbly and was a compilation via another website, which I credited. Ultimately, I have no idea how they're made! Although, you might want to check out the comments at the end of the post (<a href="http://curbly.com/diy-maven/posts/3913-used-tires-sculpture" rel="nofollow">here's the link</a>). A person posted a picture of a sculpture they made. Perhaps they can help answer your questions.

Hi,

I recieved an email with pictures of tyre sculptures, and on searching the internet they were attributed to you.
http://curbly.com/diy-maven/posts/3913-used-tires-sculpture
What I was wanting to know is HOW do you manipulate the tyres in this manner - do you require heat? is there a metak frame under them? How are the tyres secured to each other?
Here's hoping you get this.
Thanks very much.
