How to make 1/3-sized greeting cards and envelopes.

January 22, 2010

My local stamping store has great card stock and envelopes, but it’s expensive! And my bulk paper supplier is about a 35 minute drive away. And NEITHER have those cute little 5.25″ x 3.625″ size that I’m loving these days. So…to make things much easier and cheaper for everyone in the same predicament, here’s an alternative: Make 1/3 size cards and matching envelopes. Here’s how you do it…

First, cut your card stock into three 3.5″ strips as pictured below. When folded, they’ll make 3.5″ x 4.25″ cards. Yes, they’re smaller than my favorite store-bought size, but cutting them this way results in less waste, which is good!

Then print out this PDF to make a template for a matching envelope. I’d suggest cutting out the PDF copy and tracing around it onto a piece of thin cardboard (and cut THAT out) to act as a sturdy template. You can use an ordinary sheet of copy paper for your envelope.

After you cut out the envelope, find a table or countertop with a straight edge. (A regular straight edge ruler would work too, but I like the ‘table edge’ method better.) Match up your corners to the edge of the table/counter and fold as shown, using the edge as a guide. A little glue keeps the side flaps in place until you’re ready to mail your card!
