Decorating with Letters & Numbers

In my office, I have the word ‘INK’ cut from pieces of MDF and painted in an appropriate color. When people see it they invariably say, “Ink?” And then I reply, “Yeah, ink, like the stuff in a pen.” Even with that explanation, they still don’t seem to get it. Anyhoo, when I saw these clever decorating ideas at Real Simple, you can imagine my joy.
In the living room: Re-purpose ‘old signs, printing blocks, or even a bingo cage, then pair with artwork for a cohesive look’ thereby creating a focal point on a mantel or long slim table.
In the kitchen: Enlarge a restaurant menu on a copy machine to create clever place mats. Enlarge birth certificates for birthdays and wedding invitations for anniversary parties.
In the dining room: Cover an inexpensive store-bought hanging lampshade with an eye chart. Simply glue it on the shade and trim the top and bottom with ribbon.
On the bookshelf: RS suggests finding letters that spell out the purpose of the room. SLEEP for the bedroom, READ for the den/library. Or perhaps INK in a writer’s space, which is much less intimidating than the imperative WRITE.
