How to make a paper flower ball.

This weekend I thought I’d finally make something with a Styrofoam ball I had on hand. For some reason, ‘flower ball’ came to mind, and I got to work.
To make it, I used:
- a 2 1/2″ Styrofoam ball
- a 1″ daisy paper punch
- green, medium pink and light pink card stock
- PVA
- small paint brush
First, I punched out a BUNCH of flowers using the green card stock. Then, using the paint brush, I put a bit of PVA at the center of them and glued them onto the ball.

I punched out medium pink flowers and glued them over the green.

Finally, I punched out the light pink flowers and glued them over the darker pink.

When the final layer was dry, I gently folded up loose petals here and there to give the flower ball more dimension. I set it in a little dish I found at the thrift shop. I could also see them perched atop a small vase. Or you could attach an ‘eye’ and hang them, OR you could insert a small dowel and make a flower ball topiary.

I’m gathering (inexpensive) ideas to decorate our first baby’s nursery. She’s due in September, and I think these would be so cute either hanging from the ceiling, or maybe even making several in different sizes and making a mobile out of them. We’re doing a princess/garden/ultra girly theme, I think these will be adorable!!
Also loving the photo clip frame, I think that will be useful for changing out the million pictures I’m sure I’ll be taking of her after she’s born!
Congratulations Camille! They would look cute as a mobile. Yes, there will be millions of pictures!!
Another alternative to add a touch of charm is you could always use pins to push through into the center of the flowers. these days you can get various pins with some pretty heads on them. Of course dabbing a bit of glue before pushing them through will prevent them falling out. and providing that the ball is large enough so that the pins do not penetrate through the other side
I have a question on another craft!!! Under mugs decorated tiles. I followed the instructions listed in the Indianapolis Star by Shelly Miller Leer. My problem was color bleed and wrinkling of the napkin. Any suggestions? I tried not touching but it still wrinkles.
I love the idea and was making a shower gift and this happened. Please help or all these supplies will go to waste.
Hi Linda.
Just a guess, but the color bleeding might be due to quality of the construction of the napkins themselves. I used two different types of napkins from Target–one in black and white–and there was no bleeding at all. As far as the wrinkles go, you’ll have them. I think they actually give the tiles kind of a rough hand-made texture. It’s not like paper decoupage where you (usually) want to get the surfaces smooth. Did you happen to see the video of me making them? It might help; here’s a link.
Thanks Carrie. I had considered using brads too but decided against it for that very reason!
There was an idea similar to this in a Stampin’ Up catalogue… using felt flowers & brads for the flower middles… poked on wire and put in a vase. I’m doing them for a craft class for seniors that I teach; and think your idea rocks! The brads are cute and all… but punching holes in the flowers for the brads to go through is more time consuming than punching all the flowers…
Thanks for posting!!
Very nice. I love the idea of a flower ball topiary, maybe standing in a tiny plantpot.
