How to Refinish Picture Matting
Okay, we all know we can refinish picture frames, but did you know you can refinish matting too? Really! A few weeks ago, I decided to give this combo a once-over.

First I sanded down the frame and then put three coats of my favorite paint (Rustoleum’s American Accents Canyon Black, in satin) on it.
Next was the mat. I use acrylic paint and a roller when painting matting. Simple craft paint works fine as does Rustoleum’s water-based selection. The mat, especially if it’s a larger one, will warp a bit, but don’t worry! It’ll flatten right out when you put it back into the frame. Also, make sure the paint is completely dry before you re-frame it.

Of course, you DO NOT want to paint matting that will hold one-of-a-kind prints, pictures, etc, but for posters or photo reprints, it’s great! And it’ll save you a bit of cash too.
Here it is completed, now hanging vertically instead of horizontally, of course
