My Craft Room Make-Over: The Art Supply Shelf

January 7, 2009

After completing the workstation, I turned to smaller pieces, and that included an art supply shelf. What I love about my new shelf is that it’s multi-functional: it looks great and keeps my pens, pencils and scissors tidy and within reach.

To make it, MWT ripped a piece of 3/4″ MDF to 5″ x 48″. (I decided on 48″ to match the width of my new work station, above which the shelf will hang.) We added small brackets to both ends of the piece to complete the shelf structure. Next, we spaced and then cut six holes in the horizontal piece. The holes we sized to fit clear plastic cups I found at Target (on sale for $1.30 each). After construction, I applied with three coats of semi-gloss latex paint, sanding with 220 grit sandpaper between coats. Before I fitted the cups in the openings, I cut strips of white felt and glued them inside each hole to protect my cups from scratches.
