My Craft Room Make-Over: The Work Station
With the walls painted, it was time to address the work station. I considered the surface space that seemed comfortable. I wanted enough room to spread out but not so big that it would overpower the room. I decided 22″ by 48″ would work just fine. As it happened, we had an old, laminated desktop–leftover from another re-do–out in the garage accumulating dust. It was on the big size, so MWT* trimmed it down.
I also knew I wanted two pedestals with drawers to hold up the desktop. I found 11″ x 10 ½ ” x 10 ½” navy blue fabric drawers on sale at Target for $5.99 that would, again, do just fine. (As the cube drawers are only 10 ½” deep, I will have room in the rear of the 22″ deep pedestal for little used equipment or space enough to add additional drawers behind as need might arise.) We took pencil to paper once again, designing the pedestals to fit the drawers. After that was settled upon, MWT went to work measuring, ripping and assembling a sheet of 3/4″ MDF into shape.
As always, when construction was competed, MWT sanded down the project and then handed it off to me for finishing. I chose to prime the piece with an interior, oil base primer and then followed up with three coats of white, latex semi-gloss, sanding with 220 grit sandpaper between coats to get the smoothest finish possible.
